By the time the blazing sun was lowering in the sky, Chad and his fantastical friends had not found Harriet. Indeed, Chad led his group to several of the small wooded areas of the neighborhood where he and his childhood buddies would play. They searched under bushes and behind large piles of rocks that people had discarded from their yards.

No Harriet.

They took turns checking an anguished Franklin for ticks.

Knowing that sometimes Fiona would take the little dog for a walk to the elementary school where she taught, they decided to search the wooded hillside below the school. Jingle Bell Bruce and Ozzie beat the bushes with their swords.

No Harriet.

They checked a tormented Franklin for ticks.

The streetlights all over Westwood were coming on. It was getting late. Chad and his friends were beat, sweaty, and Franklin was emotionally distraught. It was time to call it a night. It was no use, Harriet simply was not out there, no matter what Clementine had predicted. It was time to thank his friends for all their efforts and set them free, and they were more than happy to pile into Franklin’s car and go home. So, Chad stood at the end of the sidewalk to wave goodbye.

As Franklin’s car approached the stop sign at the bottom of Oxford, Chad noticed a pair of headlights turning into the street. He paused to see where the car was headed. The sedan turned into McCune’s driveway. The old couple must’ve been away for the weekend. His shoulders drooped in defeat. He sighed. Well then, they certainly hadn’t seen Harriet, therefore, there was little use of him walking to their house to inquire.

Chad went into the house, closing the door. Man, he was bushed. He was also in deep do-do, very deep do-do. He had totally failed to locate Harriet. He was out of places to search and people to help him. He was out of options and feeling desperate. Tomorrow was Monday, back to work. He’d call the Humane Society and Animal Friends during his lunch break to report Harriet missing, and there was one more call he’d have to make…Dad.
